No suspect identified in shooting at crowded Harrisburg bar, police say, citing lack of witness reports

Bridge's Social Club

Bridge's Social Club opened in 2016 along North Second Street in Harrisburg.

More than a week and a half after someone fired a gun inside a crowded Harrisburg bar, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.

Now, investigators are wondering whether witnesses couldn’t clearly see the person who fired a gun inside Bridge’s Social Club or whether they are simply withholding information, Harrisburg police Sgt. Kyle Gautsch said.

“The investigation is still ongoing, but we’ve received very little witness accounts,” Gautsch said. “Whether that’s due to lack of cooperation, or just it was dark and crowded inside and no one saw it, I can’t speculate.”

Harrisburg officers were called about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 6 to the three-level bar on the 300 block of North Second Street.

City police Commissioner Thomas Carter, shortly after the shooting, confirmed that the gun was fired inside of the bar, but no one was injured.

“From my understanding the bar/club was crowded on the floor where this occurred,” Gautsch said.

In the hours after the shooting, witnesses who said they were inside of Bridge’s when shots were fired, described the scene. Two of them reported that the shooting took place on Bridge’s top floor, which they described as similar to a night club.

They also said they were surprised someone would be able to get a weapon into the bar, which is known for strict security protocols, including having guards search patrons at the door.

Gautsch said it’s unclear whether the gunman was aiming at a specific person.

“We have nothing to indicate that the gun was fired at anyone, because we have no one that came forward and advised police that someone fired at them,” he said. “Nor have we had any witnesses that have come forward and said that they observed someone firing a gun at someone else.”

This is the second time a weapon was used in the area of Bridge’s Social Club this year, according to police. In February, five people were stabbed or cut during a “large fight” in the area of the bar, police said.

Several attempts to reach the bar’s owner and managers in the wake of the incident were unsuccessful. On Thursday, a man who answered the special events and reservations phone line at Bridge’s said he had “no comment” about the shooting before hanging up.

After the shooting, Harrisburg police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 717-558-6900.
