Over 2,000 pounds of raw ground beef was recalled Friday packaged by Chicago, Ill.-based Amity Packing Company, Inc., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Services.

The ground beef, which was produced on Jan. 6, was recalled in nine states, including Pennsylvania. It was recalled because inspectors feared it was contaminated with “extraneous material, specifically clear, thin pliable plastic,” USDA officials said in a statement.

The products are 1-pound vacuum-packed packages of 95 percent lean and 5 percent fat raw, ground beef with code 0060, case code 11402, and use or freeze by date of January 3 on the product label.

Consumers are urged not to use them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Questions are being directed to Pre Brands LLC. at 1-844-773-3663.

No “adverse reactions” have been reported, the USDA noted. Anyone concerned about consuming the product and developing an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

The products subject to recall have “EST. 6916” printed on the right, front side of the package. The states where the meat was recalled include Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The problem was discovered after Pre Brands LLC. received two consumer complaints reporting findings of clear, thin pliable plastic in raw ground beef.
