Harrisburg’s iconic statue of man reading newspaper vandalized

UPDATE: Volunteers cleaned the paint off the statue on Wednesday, according to Harrisburg police.

Vandals used red paint to deface the iconic statue of a man reading a newspaper that’s located along Front Street in Riverfront Park, Harrisburg.

As of this morning, the statue’s bronze face and feet were covered in what appears to be red spray paint.

The remarkably life-like sculpture, called “Waiting,” features a man in a business suit, legs crossed and reading a newspaper on a park bench.

The artwork was removed from the park for refurbishing in 2017, because of minor vandalism and typical wear-and-tear. His return was celebrated during a press conference that winter.

Visit Hershey and Harrisburg lists the “Waiting” statue as one of the top 10 worth seeing while visiting the area.

Harrisburg police were not immediately available for comment on whether the incident is under investigation.
