Tropical Storm Isaias is heading towards Florida today, and it could be in the Harrisburg region soon.

Though it will bring lots of rain, the National Weather Service at State College does not expect any damaging winds or significant flash flooding here.

“Generally speaking, you could see rain as early as Monday night,” said meteorologist John Banghoff. “We’re expecting 2 to 4 inches across the Harrisburg area.”

That rain will likely end by late Tuesday night.

But areas along Isaias’ path now could be in for severe weather today.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Isaias is approaching the east coast of Florida now, and will begin moving up the East Coast through Georgia and the Carolinas.

Dangerous storm surges are possible along the east coast of Florida from Jupiter Inlet to Ponte Vedra Beach with water potentially rising 2 to 4 feet above ground level along the coastline.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Isaias will produce heavy rains and potential life-threatening flash flooding across portions of the northwestern Bahamas and minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas along the East Coast Sunday and Monday.

In the Harrisburg region, today will be mostly sunny and hot with a high of 93 and a low of 72 with a heat index up to 98.

A warm front lifted through last night, Banghoff said, bringing isolated pockets of showers and thunderstorms for this afternoon and this evening in a system that is unrelated to Isaias. While some areas could see heavy downpours and strong winds, these will be isolated storms, he said.

“I would not be surprised if most areas stay totally dry,” he said.

That won’t be the case Monday and Tuesday as Isaias draws near.

Monday will see a 60 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. and a 100 percent chance at night with a high of 86 and a low of 70.

The showers and thunderstorms from Isaias could start around midnight and last through most of Tuesday, dropping between 2 and 4 inches of needed rain in the Harrisburg area – with more to the east and less to the west. Expect a high of 82 and a low of 66.

A cold front on Wednesday will bring cooler and drier weather to central Pennsylvania for the rest of the week. Expect mostly sunny skies with a high of 85 and a low of 62 on Wednesday.

Thursday will be mostly sunny with a 30 percent chance of showers and a high of 83 and a low of 65.

Friday will be partly sunny with a high of 86 and a low of 66 and a 30 percent chance of showers.

And Saturday will see a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on a mostly sunny day with a high of 88.

Some parts of the region saw some heavy downpours last night and into early this morning. According to the National Weather Service, Lebanon recorded 3.7 inches of rain, Gettysburg saw 2.49 inches and York saw 2.93 inches.
