Grace Church will remain a vital presence in Harrisburg | PennLive Letters

Grace Church, a United Methodist congregation at 216 State St. in front of the Capitol in Harrisburg, is open and experiencing re-birth as we celebrate Pentecost, the birth of the Christian church following the resurrection of Christ.

Grace Church was one of 10 United Methodist churches in the city of Harrisburg proposed for merger into a new faith community called The Journey. Given the historic stature of the church and its role in housing the PA state legislature after the Capitol burned in 1897, it is appropriate that Grace Church will continue to serve as a location for quality traditional worship and excellent music.

We are living true to our mission: “Bold in Christ, Abounding in Love & Grounded in Faith.”

The congregation is united around the goal to maintain the finest of traditional worship and music, infused with a congregation dedicated to progressive theology to demonstrate love for all God’s people.

New pastoral leadership will be announced soon, and new ways of reaching the community will follow.

Dr. Shelly Moorman-Stahlman, director of music at Grace Church and professor of organ at Lebanon Valley College, has confidence in the church’s future.

“If you are currently seeking a new church home, this is an exciting time to try out Grace Church and to be a part of this re-focused time of planning, growth and implementation. Grace Church will not close!"

The church welcomes all persons, especially those interested in keeping Grace Church involved in the life of the city. Grace Church supports The Journey’s new mission in the community, but will maintain a more traditional worship style in a truly historic building.

Summer worship services are at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday. All are welcome.

Sue A. Kompare is chair of the Worship Committee and a member of the Grace Church’s Administrative Council.
