The painter and aspiring model says girls need to change their expectations of men.

Tough out there for single guys too, says Perth house painter and aspiring model Modesto De Vito

Modesto De Vito is the brother of 2003 Australian Idol favourite Cosima De Vito.

The former Perth singer controversially withdrew from the show suffering from vocal nodules, despite being in the final three alongside Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll.

Now her bachelor brother is set to stir some controversy of his own, declaring women who complain about being single need to lower their expectations, and stop going for “bad boys”.

De Vito is a self-employed house painter and aspiring model. He said he is often a shoulder to cry on for his female friends.

“They turn to me and say ‘why is it that I always seem to get hurt’?” he said.

“And I say ‘well maybe you’re going after a certain type of person’.

“I think they need to lower their expectations a little bit.”

De Vito said women tended to put him in the “friend zone” because he’s a nice guy.

“They go more for a guy that’s living out on the edge,” he said. “That whole bad boy thing.

“As soon as there’s a guy that looks like a player, they seem to be attracted to that.

“They love that thrill, that excitement, which a good guy, or a nice guy, can’t give them.”

The 39-year-old, who lives with his parents, said women could also be judgmental, especially when he tells them he loves his mum.

“I say ‘I’m very close to my mum. I love my mum’, as a lot of Italian guys do,” he said.

“So automatically they think ‘oh mama’s boy’.”

De Vito says women are equally unimpressed when he tells them he is a house painter or picks them up for dates in his Ford Ranger.

“Some of the looks on those girls’ faces ... they expect me to rock up in a friggin’ Lamborghini or something,” he said.

“Or I tell them I’m a freelance model from Perth and automatically they associate that with a player.

“But it’s the furthest from the truth. I’m honest. I’m loyal. I work hard.”

De Vito said he recently had a Skype interview with the producers of Married at First Sight but decided not to pursue a role on next season’s show.

“I don’t think reality TV is for me,” he said. “I think maybe because I’m too honest.

“I like to remain a little bit private and remain classy.”
