Peterborough United defender is committed to the club, but he’d rather leave London Road

Peterborough United full-back Jason Naismith has confirmed a desire to leave the Weston Homes Stadium, but he’s pledged to give 100% commitment to Posh while he’s at the club.

Naismith was allowed to join Scottish Premier Division side Hibernian on a season-long loan last August and the expectation was he’d move to Easter Road on a permanent basis until he damaged knee ligaments in January.

It’s not thought the 25 year-old will regain full fitness before the start of next season so his immediate future is in limbo. Naismith is not likely to break into Posh manager Darren Ferguson’s plans.

Naismith, who has one year on his Posh contract remaining, told the Edinburgh Evening News: “At the end of the day I’m still a Peterborough player and I will give my all for them every day in training. I wouldn’t let myself down like that. I train every day to the best of my ability.

“There’s obviously a world pandemic right now so it’s hard for anybody to do any business in the short-term. How it plays out in the next couple of months, and when we hopefully get some normality back, and can find out when the season is starting, maybe that will change the dynamic of things.

“I think they (Posh) would know my intentions if Hibs come calling. It would be a no brainer, but we’ll see what happens.

“I made my feelings clear when I first joined Hibs. It’s a fantastic club and the fans have taken to me.

“We’ll see what happens and if a deal could be stuck then it’s something that would seriously interest me.”

“My first year in League One I played 50 games and performed well, especially in the second half of the season and it’s something that still interests me if there’s an opportunity in England.

“You don’t really get many clubs like Hibs though, and if they are interested then that would obviously be the number one priority.”

Steve Evans signed Naismith for Posh in July 2018, beating off opposition from Aberdeen and Sunderland. He made one Posh appearance this season in a League Cup tie in August before he was loaned to Hibernian.

He made 14 appearances for Hibs before picking up his serious injury against Dundee United in January.
