Lincoln University has announced its 2019 football schedule. LU will play four home games along with six away games.
The 2019 season will be Lincoln’s 12th since reviving the football program back in 2008 and this season will also serve as the 125th year of football at Lincoln University who started football in 1894 when Lincoln played Howard University in the first college football game between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the north.
The Lincoln Athletics Department plans to have several events commemorating the 125th anniversary of football at the university in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of college football.
The Lions’ top returning player is first-team All-CIAA defensive lineman Solomon Bassett who will be a key player to watch this season.
Lincoln will play the non-conference portion of their schedule on the road with three games starting with Lock Haven University on Sept. 7. The next weekend, Lincoln will head to Dover, Del. to renew its series with Division I FCS school Delaware State on Sept. 14. The two teams met regularly when Delaware State was part of the CIAA and have not played each other since 1960.
Lincoln will complete its non-conference schedule playing in the Inaugural Gary Football Classic in Gary, Indiana. The Lions will play Kentucky State. The two teams will get to write another chapter in the legendary CIAA/SIAC interconference rivalry. Lincoln’s head coach Josh Dean spent three seasons as head coach at Kentucky State from 2013-15.
Lincoln will hold its home opener and start conference play on Sept. 28 against Livingstone College in the first of four home CIAA games. Lincoln will return to Lions Stadium for their homecoming game against Virginia Union on Oct. 12. The Lions will host Virginia State on Oct. 26 and close out the season against Chowan University on Nov. 9.
Three road games are part of Lincoln’s conference schedule, starting with Johnson C. Smith on Oct. 5. Lincoln will head to Elizabeth City State on Oct. 19 and Bowie State on Nov. 2.
Krystahl Gordon receives CIAA weekly track honor
Lincoln University women’s track and field standout Krystahl Gordon was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women’s track and Field Athlete of the Week in outdoor track and field for her performance during the week ending March 17.
Gordon turned in the top long jump performance in the CIAA so far this season with a mark of 4.92 meters (16’13/4) at the University of Maryland Invitational. Her jump currently ranks sixth in the Atlantic Region this season.
Tryouts for girls Public League All-Star Showcase
Tryouts will be held for the girls Public League All-Star Showcase at Audenried High School, 33rd and Tasker streets on Tuesday, April 2 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Players do not have to be All Public League basketball selections to participate in the tryouts. The girls’ basketball games are on Tuesday, April 9 at Audenried. First game will be held at 4 p.m. The second contest will take place at 5:30 p.m.
