What we know and what we don’t about the Virginia Beach mass shooting

It’s been nearly two months since the Virginia Beach mass shooting where 12 people and the shooter were killed inside a city municipal building.

Less than 24 hours after the news broke, reporters at the Daily Press and The Virginian-Pilot were already sending Freedom of Information Act requests to the city, the police department and other government entities that hold public records — emails, building layouts and body camera footage, for example — to get more information on the shooting.

On this week’s episode of Beyond the Headlines, reporters Katherine Hafner and Alissa Skelton, along with data reporting intern Abigail Brashear, discuss more than five dozen FOIA requests they and others in the newsroom have filed so far.

As the FBI and city investigations continue, there are more questions than ever. The reporters go over what responses they’ve gotten so far and what requests for public records have been denied.
