Virginia Beach police temporarily closed all roads in Town Center on Monday night except Market and Columbus streets to enforce the governor’s curfew order.

City officials requested Gov. Ralph Northam issue a curfew for Virginia Beach after a Sunday night protest at the Oceanfront ended with 19 arrests and more than $300,000 worth of estimated property damage to 48 businesses.

Northam announced the 8 p.m. curfew on social media about two hours before it took effect.

The police department said in a tweet the Town Center streets were closed so it could enforce the curfew order for a group of approximately 50 protesters.

The 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew will remain in effect until Thursday. Northam’s executive order says violation of the order is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was charged with violating the curfew.
