Thousands of homes in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake lost power Thursday night from severe thunderstorms in the area.
Dominion Energy’s online outage map showed that more than 3,000 customers lost power in both of the cities. While Dominion had determined the storms were the cause of the outage, it did not have an estimated restoration time as of 8:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Virginia Beach and Chesapeake after radar located a storm near Princess Anne. Winds were expected to reach up to 60 mph and cause damage to trees and power lines.
There was a flood advisory issued for Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Portsmouth that remains in effect until 11:15 p.m. About an inch of rain had fallen as of 8:11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
