There is gridlock in Plymouth city centre with drivers forced to turn around in a bid to avoid long queues getting out of the city.

Long tailbacks are reported on Notte Street heading in the direction of the Barbican with traffic crawling through the city centre.

No specific traffic incidents have been reported with the tailbacks likely to be caused by the ongoing roadworks on the Exeter Street viaduct.

The viaduct is currently closed outbound due ongoing work related to the new Bretonside development.

Much of the traffic that would usually use the viaduct has instead been forced to bottleneck along Notte Street to get out of the city.

Why the roadworks are taking place

On Monday July 8, the outbound side of Exeter Street closed for the next phase of works.

During this phase of the project, teams have been working on the Charles Cross end of the viaduct for the first four weeks before switching their attentions to the St Andrews Cross end for the third and final phase.

This, the council say, is so access can be maintained to the Drake Circus delivery entrance and also the rear of the buildings along the northern side of the viaduct.

South West Highways Ltd, who have been appointed by the council, are removing the existing surface of carriageways, waterproofing it and then resurfacing. Pavements will be repaved with granite slabs and existing bollards will be upgraded in order to match the improvements made by McLaren Group.

It is hoped that the works will be entirely completed by September 15.
