Katie Churcher, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Dansie had lived together with the woman but they had split up.

She added that she was out on the Barbican on a first date with a man when she spotted the defendant drinking with a friend on January 2.

Miss Churcher said the woman left the pub but arranged to meet her date later.

The barrister said they ended up at Favourite Food in Notte Street in the early hours.

She added that Dansie appeared and repeatedly punched the date.

Miss Churcher said police were called but they made no formal complaint.
