The first EU national has used a new service offered in Plymouth to help them apply for settled status after Brexit.

The city council is offering free use of two phones with the Android operating system so people can access the Government scheme.

It emerged that the online-only application process currently in a trial phase does not work on Apple phones.

The two dedicated phones with Google’s Android system are available at the council’s 1st Stop Shop in New George Street in the city centre.

Cllr Sally Haydon, the city council’s cabinet member for customer service, revealed the first application had been made using the service.

She told the authority’s performance scrutiny committee: “We have been told that we will probably have more customers directed our way.”

The EU settlement scheme is currently in a public test phase. Applicants must be EU citizens residents in the UK with a valid EU passport, or a non-EU family member of an EU citizen, with a biometric residence card.

The test phase requires them to use a Home Office app to confirm their identity, which only works on Android devices.

The scheme becomes fully open on March 30, the day after the UK is due to leave the European Union.

There are an estimated 11,000 EU citizens currently living in Plymouth.
