A banned driver sped at 80mph on a major Plymouth road in a bid to escape police, a court heard.

Idiot Reece Rowe, aged 22, raced away from officers with three passengers in a Renault Clio on the 30mph street.

He was already disqualified having previously crashed into four parked vehicles, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

Jailing him for 16 months, a judge told him that he had put lives at risk.

Father-of-one Rowe, of Sheridan Road, Manadon, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in Ernesettle Lane on January 25.

He also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Judge James Townsend told him: “This was very bad driving which put yourself, your passengers and more importantly other road users at serious risk.

“You achieved speeds of 80mph in a 30mph limit road and you caused damage to other vehicles.

“It is made worse by your list of previous convictions. In 2017, you were sentenced to imprisonment for another offence of dangerous driving.”

Rowe was also banned from driving for two years.

Althea Brooks, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said police tried to stop banned driver Rowe at 2pm.

She said that he raced away at speeds of 80mph with three passengers when he realised officers were about to pounce.

The court heard that he was convicted of aggravated vehicle taking in 2013.

He was jailed for 15 months four years later for a string of offences.

He took the keys of a Ford Focus after leaving a pub and drove dangerously through city streets just after midnight.

He also sped past a police car which tried to stop him and forced a passing motorcyclist to veer out of his way,

Rowe on that occasion crashed into four parked cars, writing off three of them.

Ali Rafati, for Rowe, said his client had been assessed by mental health workers.

He added that probation officers could not offer an alternative to custody.

Mr Rafati said: “He will work in prison with those who are in a position to help him.”
