Plymouth was battered by strong winds and moments of torrential rain last night - and it caused a few issues around the city.

Yesterday the Met Office issued two weather warnings for wind which spanned over four days - and forecast speeds of 70mph in some areas of the region.

The yellow warning came into place for the whole of Devon and Cornwall last night at 10pm through to Thursday at 9am, returning again at 12pm on Friday until 6pm on Saturday.

Fallen trees and debris affected the city, and drivers are being urged to use caution on Thursday morning as a number of roads and routes around Devon are blocked or partially blocked.

A warning to take care near the coast also remains in effect with a danger from overtopping and localised flooding at high tide.

Bridge closures were put in place at the height of the winds in the two counties.

We will bring you live updates as we get them.

Fire service gives more information on last night's call out

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: We were called to Albert Road at 10.50pm to reports of loose ridge tiles. It was a derelict property [where the] slates were coming off.

“One appliance went to remove the loose tiles and cordoned the below area with barriers. They also made safe the chimney pot as it was in a precarious position.”
