Heavy rain is lashing Plymouth - and more is on the way.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the region, which will remain in place until 10pm today, Friday.

This means there could be some travel disruption in Plymouth and elsewhere in the South West.

On the A38 near Plympton at the Deep Lane junction, BBC Travel SouthWest is reporting "deep surface water" on the carriageway.

What to expect

  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible

Temperatures will only peak at 17C today in Plymouth, the Met Office says. Elsewhere in the region temperatures could reach 18C.

There could be gusts of almost 40mph, the Met Office is predicting, however wind speed itself will rarely go over 20.

Almost a month's worth of rain is expected to lash parts of the UK today, mostly falling on high ground across the South West.

The weather warning covers Wales, north west England and south west England, with high ground expected to see the worst weather.

Events planned for Friday in Devon have been cancelled, including Sea in the Park in Plymouth. Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said up to 80mm of rain is possible in some areas.

Traffic lights 'taken out' in Billacombe Road crash - live updates

There has been a crash on a busy stretch of road in Plymouth this afternoon.

Pictures show the scene of the crash on Billacombe Road, which has damaged a new set of crossing lights.

An eyewitness said at 12.50pm police hadn’t arrived yet. Plymouth Live is attempting to contact Devon and Cornwall Police for more information.

It is not clear if anybody has been injured in the collision at this stage. Live updates here.

Warning as 'deep surface water' on A38

A38 eastbound closed

A38 Eastbound closed, queuing traffic for three miles due to overturned vehicle and spillage between B3372 (Woodpecker Junction) and A385 (Marley Head Junction). The road has been closed whilst recovery of the trailer takes place. A car towing a catering trailer has overturned spilling cooking oil over the road.
