Whether you're celebrating Valentine's Day or not, it's always lovely to hear a good old story about true love.

We've searched the city to find some of the most heartwarming romantic tales that we could find.

From hopeless romantics to high-school sweethearts, Plymouth has them all.

Over the years, there have been many extravagant proposals, including in front of the big tank at the National Marine Aquarium, and even on the basketball court at a Plymouth Raiders' match.

Here are the 10 most romantic people in the city.

If you thought romance was dead, think again.

Romantic Michael Lee surprised his partner with a marriage proposal at a Plymouth Raiders game, in front of more than 1,000 excited fans.

The 34-year-old went through a lot of planning to pull of his incredible proposal, which saw him get down on one knee to pop the question to Jade Wilson, in the centre of the court just before the match started.

And luckily she said “Yes”.

Michael stage-managed the whole stunt with the help of Plymouth Pavilions and the Raiders amid all the lights, music and excitement of the pre-game build up, on December 30, 2018.

Toby Gorniak

On Valentine's Day 2016 hip hop hero Toby Gorniak set up a surprise for his wife, Jo.

The surprise was pulled off with the help of the couples' children at their home in Plymouth.

The husband-and-wife dream team run Street Factory CIC, a group that uses hip hop dance as a vehicle to transform the lives of young and disadvantaged people.

They help students discover who they are, build resilience and give them the confidence to achieve their goals through various programmes.

Louis Harrison

In 2016 romantic Plymouth man, Louis Harrison, proposed to his girlfriend in front of a fishy audience at the National Marine Aquarium.

Unsuspecting Bethany James thought she was having a normal day out on Valentine's Day, when things couldn't have been more surprising.

After being picked out by a member of staff to take part in a demonstration in front of the Eddystone Reef tank – her boyfriend of five years got down on one knee as divers held up a 'Will you marry me?' banner behind them.

"I just remember bursting into tears," said the then 20-year old, an administration assistant at Cornish Interiors.

"I didn't realise what was happening; I just wanted to hold him."

Babcock worker Louis, then aged 23, had been devising the plan with Beth's dad and the aquarium since Christmas.

Thankfully she said yes!

The aquarium's host team worked with Louis to help create a unique experience the happy couple would never forget.

Leaving the whole day as a surprise, Beth was left speechless when Louis got down on bended knee to ask for her hand in marriage.

"You just know if you love someone you are going to say yes to them," said Beth, who lives in Plympton and went to Hele's School.

"I didn't have a clue he was going to do it. The only time I might have clicked was when he and my mum suggested I should get my nails done so my hands looked nice!"

James Parry

In April last year, a very confident dad from Eggbuckland took the ultimate risk and booked his wedding day BEFORE even popping the question to his bride-to-be.

James Parry was convinced his partner of nine years, Kirsty Lamerton, would say yes.

James and the children planned the proposal to the finest of details

So instead of waiting to propose, he went ahead and decided the date of the wedding, booked the venue, the registrar as well as arranging her hairdresser and makeup artist for the big day.

Thankfully, the 36-year-old was correct and mum-of-three Kirsty did not hesitate when deciding to accept his offer of marriage.

Romantic-at-heart James, in a Don't Tell the Bride-style proposal, had even recruited all three children, Daniel, 10, Ella, six and Amelia, two, to wear printed t-shirts saying 'she said yes' at the magical moment.

William Brown

William Brown

A romantic war hero put out a plea for help to find his long-lost sweetheart after spending sixty years searching for her.

William Brown was determined to find the Plymouth woman he met in 1958 and contacted Plymouth Live for help.

After the article was published, dozens of people helped reunite William with Joyce Fowler.

The 78-year-old from Cambridge spent over 60-years searching for the "very pretty, kind and caring" Joyce, and never gave up.

The pair met when they were serving at the British Military Hospital in Singapore - Joyce was in the British Army as a nurse and Bill was in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Bill said he always felt guilty that he never got to say goodbye to his sweetheart as he was suddenly taken ill and hospitalised. He was then flown back to the UK and was never able to let Joyce know.

He has now been able to explain to Joyce why he left Singapore, after Alexandra Hospital, where they both worked, contacted him and helped put the couple back in touch.

Eric

Can you help the love letter find its home?
Can you help the love letter find its home?

Is there anything more romantic than a heartfelt poem?

A romance filled note was found hidden inside a book on steam trains, during the renovation of a former charity shop in Mutley Plain.

The handwritten message entitled ‘Dedicated to the one I love’ is apparently meant for a Lynda from Eric - but they are yet to be found.

The folded scrap of paper was found inside the book Living Steam which was in turn concealed behind a radiator in the former British Heart Foundation charity shop.

Proprietor Lisa Clark — who will be launching children's music sessions in the building from February 25 — and the House2Home Building Projects builders who discovered the passionate poem are hoping to find its author and intended recipient.

The poem reads: "Lynda darling, please don’t change, I love you as you are. I look up to the stars a night, see you my shining star.

“I love you more than words can say. I love you every single day. I’ll love you till the sun goes cold, I want you now to kiss and hold. Lynda when I look at you, the love inside me feels so true. My love for you will never perish. This love for you I’ll always cherish. Love Eric.”

The Vospers childhood sweethearts

Trevor and Sue have been married for 48 years and are looking forward to their retirement years together

Trevor and Sue Dark might just be one of the most romantic couples in the city.

The recently retired Plympton couple had worked at Vospers in Millbay for a combined total of 75 years.

Trevor began as an apprentice in Millbay 50 years ago, at the tender age of 15.

His wife, Sue, then joined the business 25 years later as a parts delivery van driver in order to spend more time with the man she loves - isn't that lovely.

Alice

Mysterious posters with a message to someone called Chris appeared all over Plymouth city centre in March last year.

The notes were written by a woman called Alice and say that Chris read poetry to her in September last year - how romantic.

It is not known why Alice wanted to find Chris - and it's not known if the couple were ever reunited.

The posters were spotted around the city centre and were thought to have been there for months.

One note, which was taped to the outside of the old BHS building reads: "Hi Chris, it's Alice.

"We met in September, you read poetry to me.

"Call me, 07399604549."

Dave Vallance

An 83-year-old man from Ivybridge stole hearts when he appeared on ITV's This Morning for a second time, looking for love.

Widowed ex-firefighter, Dave Vallance, has been on the search for a significant other, after his wife, Doreen, passed away more than two years ago.

Last year, Dave had hand-written a lonely hearts ad that got no response - and he's still hopeful he could find the one.

He posted the note asking to find a female companion over 70, who was a "non-smoker" and "non-drinker" for friendship and days out.

Dave discussed that nobody had come forward, but that he did receive a parcel from This Morning.

Dave previously told Plymouth Live that he wanted his friend to post the advert on the notice board in Ivybridge.

He said: "I said can you post a letter, a little notice, on the board in Ivybridge to see if there is anyone as lonely as I am who wants a bit of company?

“She did just that, but I never had one reply.”

The notice read: “Gent in good order. Looking for companionship with a lady, 70 plus, Ivybridge area.

“Non-smoker and non-drinker. For friendship, days out, etc.”

Dave, who lives alone with his dog Jack, is looking for help to find a companion.

Jade & Matthew Elliott

Our list wouldn't be complete without including last year's Win a Dream Wedding winners.

Jade and Matthew Elliott's romance blossomed after they met at school. More than 14 years later they now share their lives with their children Daisy and Max.

Finally, they were able to marry during a beautiful ceremony at Mount Edgcumbe House and The Orangery surrounded by delighted family and friends.

Jade and Matthew touched the hearts of the Plymouth people after entering the competition.

They had been forced to postpone getting married after family members became ill and they struggled to raise enough funds - but finally they were able to celebrate their big day in style.

Jade said: "We're really happy - it couldn't have been better. It was nerve-wracking but it's been an amazing day. Coming up to this moment has been a whirl-wind.

"You think four months would take a while but it comes around really quick. After 14 years I wasn't sure we'd ever get married but today has been so lovely."
