A new play park which has items especially designed for visually impaired children has opened in Plymouth.

The £43,000 park on Tailyour Road in Crownhill was officially opened by eight-year-old Katie Angle and her six-year-old brother, Isaac Wrench, on Thursday June 6.

The park includes a twin swing, spinning dish roundabout, a climbing frame with slide, play net and balance beams as well as tactile play items designed especially for visually impaired children.

The park was designed in consultation with residents and has been jointly funded by housing associations Westward and Sovereign, with help from installers Earthwright.

Katie, who was overjoyed to be picked to open the park officially, said: “I helped with the planting the other week too, I’ve been super-excited about the opening and I ran home from school as fast as I could today so I would get here first.”

Katie's and Isaac's mum, Emma, said her family is "really pleased" the park has reopened and has been given a makeover.

She said: “We worked with Sovereign and Westward to tell them the kind of things we wanted to see in the park for our children. The old park was rundown and the whole area had to be shut for ages.

"My son is autistic and we come here every day, usually, so we’re really pleased it’s open again.”

The park is located on Tailyour Road near to the Royal British Legion building.
