A man has appeared in court accused of stabbing his wife twice in the neck and then trying to strangle her with a chain.

Lee Hellyer, aged 40, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Friday afternoon after officers were called to a property on Verna Road in St Budeaux.

A woman was found suffering injuries which police said were believed to have been caused by a bladed instrument.

Hellyer, of Peters Park Close, was later charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and appeared at Plymouth Magistrates' Court this morning.
