A thug who pushed his fingers into his partner’s eyes and hit her with a box has been jailed for five years.

Heavy drinker Lewis May, aged 40, was convicted by a jury on Wednesday of leaving the woman covered in blood and bruises in a series of attacks.

Recorder Jonathan Barnes granted May said that he would be granted one night of freedom before being sentenced to allow him time to make arrangements for his dog.

During the trial at Plymouth Crown Court, the woman revealed how May poked her in the eyes so hard that she thought they were going to pop out.

She added that he cut open her head by striking her three or four times with a plastic box.

May, of Alexandra Road, Mutley, pleaded not guilty to assaulting the woman causing grievous bodily harm without intent on Boxing Day 2017.

He has also denied two counts of assaulting her causing actual bodily harm on or about December 17 and again on December 18.

However, May was found guilty on all three counts by unanimous verdicts at the end of a three-day trial.

The jury found that May had forcibly gripped his partner at the home they shared, thrown her around and left her covered in bruises.

The court heard that the woman left May after the last attack and was helped by a witness who said she was covered in blood.

She needed 15 stitches to a cut to her head at hospital.

At his sentencing Recorder Barnes said the fact that May was in drink and had carried out the assault in a domestic setting were both aggravating factors.

He sentenced May to 18 months apiece for each of the counts of actual bodily harm, to run concurrently and five years for the unlawful wounding. He was also made subject to a restraining order until further notice.
