Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series trailer is the start of something new

Show us the new Sharpay

The first trailer for Disney Plus’ High School Musical: The Musical: The Series lives up not only to the spirit of the original High School Musical but also the bonkers mood set by the series’ unabashedly long name of the show.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is just as meta as the title suggests. The series, like High School Musical, is about a group of high school students playing on a ... musical. The twist is that this time around, the musical is High School Musical itself. A group of high school juniors compete to nab roles in the show and forge (or repair) relationships with their co-stars.

The trailer gives us a first glimpse of characters like Ricky (Joshua Bassett), Nini (Olivia Rodrigo), and E.J. (Matt Cornett) in action. There’s clearly some pining going on — Ricky is trying to win his now ex-girlfriend Nini back despite the fact that she’s already dating E.J.

The series premieres on Nov. 12 in tandem with the launch of Disney Plus, the company’s new streaming service that will house most of Disney’s film catalogue, and then some. A Disney Plus subscription costs $6.99 per month, but Disney is bundling the service with both Hulu and ESPN Plus at a $12.99 price point. The streaming service will be available on a variety of different platforms and in multiple countries at launch.
