The 2018 Hot Wing competition was one of the highlights of the Need Street Food event calendar.

It was held in The Merchant House, in Highland Road, Southsea, with wings supplied by Bransbury Park Butchers and sauces supplied by the Portsmouth-based Chilli Mash Company.

There was a disclaimer signed prior to consumption and that was fitting as the brave contenders who stepped up put their taste buds to the test with some insanely piquant chilli sauces.

The competitors sat lined up on a stage in the basement in front of a baying crowd. The competition consisted of six rounds, from a mild 30,000 Scovilles up to a fiery three million.

The last man standing, just, and crowned the Chicken Chief 2018 was Dan Brookes, from Portsmouth.

Stewart Woolston, from the Chilli Mash Company, said: '˜Thanks to his tenacious taste buds and enthusiastic team of supporters, he won through to claim the first prize '“ a hamper supplied by Chilli Mash Company - drenched with sweat and with a face as red as the wings he had been munching.

'˜The event was a success and nearly £200 was raised for charity and everyone is already looking forward to next year.'

The Chilli Mash Company, which was set up by couple Nathanael Boarer and Stephanie Kayirangwa, from Southsea, and Steve Woodward, whom they met at a chilli festival, offer the sauces for sale on their website and on Amazon.
