The striker joined the Blues from Ipswich for an undisclosed fee in July 2017 and was appointed club captain.

The Jersey-born forward had slipped down the pecking order before the shutdown of the season, however.

He hadn't made an appearance for Kenny Jackett's side in 18 matches, while he trained with Bournemouth's under-21s for a period. Pitman also was stripped of the skipper's armband in September.

The ex-Bristol City man is coming towards the end of his three-year deal.

Although all Pompey contract talks are on hold amid the coronavirus crisis, it's looking likely the 32-year-old will be released.

While Pitman intends to go into coaching in the future, he's not planning to hang his boots up just yet.

Speaking to the Back Of The Net Podcast, he said: ‘I can't imagine Bournemouth to be asking me to come back playing anytime soon!

‘But, of course, I'd come back in a heartbeat. I still want to carry on playing for a few years yet, but coaching definitely (I’d be interested in).

‘I've done my badges and been in a few times to help Warren (Cummings) with the under-13s team.

‘My little boy has just signed for the under-nines so I'll definitely be about.’

Pitman's arrival at Fratton Park in 2017 was regarded as a major coup at the time.

He's scored 42 times in 99 appearances for Pompey - with 25 of goals coming in his maiden season.

Having spent the majority of his career at Bournemouth – playing a key role in their journey from League Two to the Premier League – a return to the south coast was a big pull why he joined the Blues.

He added: ‘Coming to the south coast was a massive attraction to me.

‘My wife's family live in between Bournemouth and Portsmouth so it was a big attraction for me.

‘If I couldn't sign for Bournemouth then Portsmouth was the next best option.’
