Josephine V. Baker — Spring Valley

Josephine V. Baker, age 95, of Spring Valley, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Spring Valley Senior Living.

She was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Chatfield to Elmer and Mabel (Gordon) Sutherland. She attended school through the eighth grade in Chatfield and Wykoff. On March 16, 1940, she was united in marriage to Dewey Gerald Baker at the Methodist Church in Wykoff, and to this union five children were born — Eugene, Nevin, Frances, Shelley and Roger.

Josephine was a farm wife and also worked at a cafe in Spring Valley, as a maid at the 5th Ave Hotel in Rochester and hoed beans for Libby’s. Later, she worked at Waters-Conley and Lake Center in Stewartville.

Josephine enjoyed sewing and quilting, gardening, listening to music, especially polkas and waltzes, putting puzzles together, going on rides and an occasional trip to the casino.

She is survived by four children, Nevin (Judy) Baker of Jacksonville, Fla., Frances (Tom) Lawson and Shelley Baker, both of Spring Valley, and Roger (Cindy) Baker of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Melvin Eickhoff of Spring Valley.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2003; son, Eugene; three grandsons; nine sisters; and two brothers.

Private family services will be held at a later date, burial will be at the Spring Valley Cemetery.
