Joyce Mickelson -- Rochester

Joyce Mickelson, age 90, of Rochester, died Sunday March 17, 2019, at Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth.

Joyce Nadine Movick was born Dec. 6, 1928, in rural Holt, to Alf and Nora (Dovre) Movick, the second of five children. She attended elementary school in Holt and graduated from New Folden High School in 1946. She continued her schooling and briefly taught in a one-room schoolhouse in rural northern Minnesota until joining her sister, Wilma, at the Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing in Minneapolis, graduating in 1953, as a registered nurse. She worked as a surgical RN at Bethesda Hospital in Crookston.

On Nov. 7, 1958, Joyce married Dennis Mickelson at the Movick family farm in Holt. The couple lived on their family farm in rural Buxton, N.D., from the time of their marriage until 1989. Joyce continued to work at Bethesda Hospital in Crookston for several years before devoting her full attention to family and farm life.

She enjoyed spending summers cultivating larger gardens of vegetables, fruit and flowers, and enjoyed oil painting and music during the long North Dakota winters. Joyce was a talented musician, playing organ for local Lutheran churches for many years.

In 1989, she and Dennis retired to Rochester, to be closer to their daughter and grandsons. Following Dennis’s death in 2001, Joyce continued to live in Rochester and has been a resident of Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth since 2016.

Surviving are her daughter, Judith (Keith) Anderson of Rochester; and grandsons, Nicholas Samson and Sean Samson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis; sisters, Marilyn Peterson and Wilma Buisman; and brothers, Kieth Movick, and John (Jack) Movick.

Private family inurnment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease Research.
