Planet Fitness reopened all 16 of its Rhode Island gyms on Thursday and is requiring its employees and members to wear face masks.

On Monday, Rhode Island entered Phase 2 of its reopening effort during the coronavirus pandemic. This phase allows for the reopening, within guidelines, of gyms and fitness centers.

Planet Fitness says it’s taking multiple precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

For example, employees will have their temperature checked before starting work each day. The clubs will have capacity limits, and some equipment will be unavailable so gym users can keep a safe distance from each other. Employees have additional training on keeping the clubs clean, according to Planet Fitness.

Additionally, the state says gyms must screen customers and collect contact-tracing information from employees and gym users.

The state recommends closing locker rooms and other communal areas. The use of communal showers isn’t permitted. Single-stall showers are permitted only if they’re sanitized between uses.

Activities involving contact between people — such as wrestling, boxing or martial arts — is not permitted in Phase 2.
