Something for everyone's tastes at Bold Point Park's Waterfront Concerts series

EAST PROVIDENCE — Waterfront Concerts' Bold Point Park summer series is an a la carte menu of music catering to every taste, with a lineup of acts that ranges from Violent Femmes to John Fogerty within a few days of each other.

Now in its third season at Bold Point Park, directly across the river from Providence’s India Point Park, the venue is coming into its own this season with a full slate of music acts running from June through August.

In addition to having several more shows than last year, there’s also more variety.

“We have a great mix of genres this year,” said Katie Spaziano, general manager of Waterfront Concerts. “We really amped up some things that we got some great feedback on. For example, country. We definitely have more country this year, we have some bigger names.

"And I really like that we added genres that we’ve never had before, like the Roadblock Festival. I consider that to be a more punk-rock event. That will ... get some folks out to the venue who haven’t been there before.”

The Roadblock Festival, on July 27, features Bad Religion, The Menzingers, Charly Bliss, H.R. of Bad Brains and the Cro-Mags, among others.

After starting out with the Garden Grove festival in June, the season is bookended with the R.I. Reggae Festival 2019 with UB40 on Aug. 31. “They complement each other very well,” said Spaziano. “I just really like that we have a very well-rounded season that took a lot of work and a lot of coordination, but it’s nice to see that it all came together.”

Some of the acts that were a hit last season, including The Beach Boys and Billy Currington, are returning this season in response to concertgoer feedback.

Concerts that Spaziano expects to be really popular include John Fogerty, the former lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revival; country singer Chase Rice; and Friday's double-bill show with Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

In addition to Rice and Currington, country fans have a couple of other acts to check out this summer: Josh Turner and Lee Brice.

Another night that will likely be a hit is the Tribute Fest on Aug. 3, featuring tribute bands playing the music of Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Journey.

And for classic rock fans, June 30 brings The Royal Affair Tour with Yes, Asia, Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy and John Lodge of the Moody Blues.

With the venue and the season’s varied lineup, Spaziano said, “It lends itself to a really nice night out. You don’t have to be a huge fan to have a nice night out. You don’t have to know every band at the festival to have a great time. You can just come and enjoy a nice night out. We invite people to come check us out.”

Bold Point Park is located at 600 Waterfront Drive in East Providence, off Veterans Memorial Parkway and next to Tockwotton on the Waterfront. Free on-street parking and paid parking is available close to the venue. For more information, visit waterfrontconcerts.com.
