Rhode Island is home to lots of special and delicious chocolates.

Sweenor's Chocolates is not just the biggest of the state's chocolate makers, but also the oldest. Of course that wouldn't matter if their chocolates weren't also fresh and delicious. They sell their chocolates at two stores, at 21 Charles St., Wakefield, (401) 783-4433, and Garden City Shopping Center, Cranston, (401) 942-2720, as well as online at Sweenorschocolates.com. You name it, they make it, from turtles and truffles to bark and dark-chocolate-covered everything. New for Valentine's Day are chocolate-covered Strawberry Peeps.

Hauser Chocolatier is ready for Valentine's Day with a store full of chocolates and truffles at 59 Tom Harvey Rd., Westerly, (401) 596-8866. The company was founded in 1983 in Connecticut by the Swiss-born Hauser family. They moved their business to Westerly in 1990. You can download their most tempting catalog from their website, Hauserchocolates.com, or see photos on Facebook.

The Newport Sweet Shoppe, 82 William St., Newport, (401) 619-4600, has just reopened after renovations and they are fully stocked with truffles and chocolates. Shoppers can also pick up other sweets, including cupcakes. Learn more at newportsweetshoppe.com and on Facebook.

Jennifer's Chocolates is a sweet shop at 254 Robinson St., Wakefield, (401) 783-1673, where you can purchase Jennifer Dowell's creations. She has been making chocolates for some 24 years. This year she has Valentine S'mores made with homemade marshmallow, strawberry basil jam hearts and heart-topped chocolate-dipped Oreos. Learn more at jenniferschocolates.com.
