March was dry and cold in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE — March 2019 was colder and drier than normal.

And as March normally does, it saved its warmest days for the end of the month.

With a 36.7 degree average temperature in Providence, March was 2.2 degrees below normal. The month started out cold. Nine of the first 10 days were colder than normal. And it didn't improve much. Twenty of the month's 31 days were colder than normal. 

The coldest temperature was recorded March 7, when the mercury dropped to 9 degrees. The warmest days, with highs of 64, were recorded on Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and March 31.

After a string of wet months, March was drier than normal in Providence. The 3.38 inches of rain was 1.63 inches less than normal. It was the first month since July 2018 that Providence has had below-normal rainfall.

March brought 11.8 inches of snow, with most of that falling between March 2 and 4. Providence normally gets 6.3 inches of snow in March.
