PROVIDENCE — A fire in a three-family house in the Wanskuck neighborhood was confined to the kitchen of the second floor, but three adults, one child, three dogs and a cat were displaced.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Houle said the fire at 141 Hawkins St. was reported shortly after 6 p.m. He said the occupants of the first two floors got out safely and the third-floor occupant was not home.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to three adults and one child. The second floor had smoke and fire damage, and the first floor had water damage, Houle said.

By 6:45 p.m., the fire was under control and an hour later, the last companies left, Houle said, although Providence fire prevention investigators stayed to determine a cause.
