PAWTUCKET — Mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been detected in mosquitoes in Attleboro and Seekonk, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Both Bay State communities border Pawtucket. Seekonk also borders East Providence, and Attleboro also borders Central Falls and Cumberland.

The mosquitoes that tested positive in Seekonk were collected Thursday, and the ones in Attleboro on Friday.

The Department of Public Health advises people to avoid mosquito bites by staying indoors or wearing protective clothing during peak biting times from dusk to dawn, especially evening and early morning hours; by wearing long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors; and by applying insect repellent with DEET, permethrin, picardin or oil of lemon eucalyptus when going outdoors.

The department also recommends mosquito-proofing homes by draining standing water, especially in gutters, drains and unused flowerpots and wading pools. Birdbath water should be changed frequently. Tight-fitting screens on all windows and doors will keep mosquitoes outside.
