NORTH KINGSTOWN — A 63-year-old man was killed Tuesday after his pickup truck, stopped in the breakdown lane, was struck by another vehicle on Route 403 west, according to the North Kingstown police.

The police have not released the name of the man, who was the sole occupant of the GMC Canyon.

According to the police, a Honda Element driven by a 40-year-old woman was traveling in the breakdown lane and struck the GMC Canyon after passing a tractor-trailer. The impact propelled the Honda into the travel lane and a collision with the tractor-trailer, the police said.

All three drivers were taken to area hospitals, the police said. The 63-year-old man was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Honda and the driver of the tractor-trailer, identified only as a 48-year-old man, were treated and released.

The crash happened around 3:39 p.m.  just west of where Route 403 goes under Post Road (Route 1). Route 403 carries traffic from Route 4 and Frenchtown Road into the industrial park. It becomes Roger Williams Way at Commerce Park Road, where the golf course begins.

The crash closed the westbound lanes of Route 403 out of Quonset for about three hours during Tuesday's evening commute.

The North Kingstown Police, North Kingstown Fire Department and Rhode Island State Police responded to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by members of the North Kingstown Police Accident Reconstruction Unit and Detective Division. The police are asking that anyone who was driving on Route 403 at the time and witnessed the Honda Element operating and/or the GMC Canyon stopped in the breakdown lane to call the North Kingstown Detective Division at (401) 294-3316 ext 8211.
