PROVIDENCE — At least 12 people have been taken to area hospitals following a crash involving a RIPTA bus at the intersection of South Main Street and Power Street.

The crash occurred shortly after noon, and involved a RIPTA bus and a white Jeep Grand Cherokee. Eleven people were injured on the bus, including the driver, said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Capracotta. The driver of the Jeep was also injured; a passenger in that vehicle was not hurt, Capracotta said.

Capracotta said the injuries included broken bones.

Ambulances were on scene from Providence, Cranston, East Providence, North Providence, Pawtucket and West Warwick. Six of the injured people were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, three were taken to Roger Williams Medical Center and three were taken to Miriam Hospital.

South Main Street has reopened after being closed immediately after the crash.
