EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Cinema was allowed to reopen on Tuesday after being closed temporarily following an issue with fees owed to the city.

The city shut down the cinema on Saturday evening after a check issued by the owners for $9,250 was returned for insufficient funds, according to a letter from City Clerk Samantha Burnett to Ben Kafash, one of the cinema’s owners.

The amount was intended to pay business renewal fees for three licenses — a theater license, a Sunday theater license and a license to sell food — city spokeswoman Patricia Resende wrote in an email.

Cinema owners provided the city a cashier’s check on Tuesday, Resende said.

Reached by phone Tuesday afternoon, one of the theater’s owners, Peter Kafash, said that the theater was open but would not comment further.

“Everything is fine,” he said.
