PROVIDENCE -- The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for northern Rhode Island and northern Connecticut for a storm that's expected to bring snow and ice to the region overnight into Thursday.

"Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute," the Weather Service says.

"Slow down and use caution while traveling," the Weather Service says.

The storm is expected to bring just two inches of snow, but it could also cause icy conditions, according to the Weather Service.

The advisory goes into effect at 1 a.m. Thursday and continues until 1 p.m.

The mixed precipitation will eventually change to rain, but that rain should continue and become heavy late Thursday night. It will continue into Friday and is likely to change back to light snow Friday aftrenoon into Friday night.

Before that, a low pressure center will pass along the south coast this morning, bringing some light precipitation, the Weather Service says.

Expect mostly cloudy skies with a high near 41 in Providence.
