R.I. presidential primary is Tuesday

Journal Staff
President Donald Trump, left, and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden will appear on Tuesday's primary ballot.

The Rhode Island presidential primary takes place Tuesday.

Former Vice President Joseph Biden shares space on the Democratic ballot with candidates no longer in the race, including U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

President Donald Trump’s name appears on the Republican ballot along with former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who exited the race on March 18, and perennial candidate Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rhode Islanders have been encouraged to vote by mail ballot, and fewer polling locations will be open than usual.

All registered voters were sent mail ballot applications and had to return them by May 19. Once the ballots arrived, voters were told to fill them out and return them immediately to ensure that they are counted.

Because some ballots were mailed late, voters also have the option of dropping them off at their local city or town hall on Tuesday. There will be a secure drop box at each city or town hall; ballots must be dropped there by 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted.

Voters who missed the deadline to request a mail ballot may still request an emergency ballot by contacting their local board of canvassers.
