The third heat wave of the summer could break today, but not by much.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high temperature of 87 degrees in Providence, three degrees shy of the temperature needed to continue the heat wave.

There’s a 30% chance of rain, scattered showers with thunderstorms also possible.

“It will remain quite warm today and Friday, but less humid as the frontal boundary pushes south of New England,” the Weather Service says. “High pressure building across the Canadian Maritimes will result in cooler temperatures this weekend especially across eastern New England.”

Expect partly sunny skies Friday with a high near 84.

Saturday should bring partly sunny skies with a high near 80 and Sunday looks mostly cloudy with a high near 78 and a chance of showers.
