2019 Providence Journal All-State Boys Soccer Team
PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
ROY BARRIOS
Tolman, Senior
Midfield
Last year Barrios made his debut as a first-team All-State selection and this year his play only got better. The Tigers’ senior midfielder was a dominant force all season long and his ability to finish and share made him impossible to cover for opposing defenses. Barrios led the Tigers with 14 goals and had 13 assists and helped guide them back to the state championship game.
KERIN MURILLO
Cranston East, Senior
Forward
Murillo was the best player on the field every time he stepped on the pitch for the Thunderbolts. The double- and triple-teams defenses threw at him didn’t do much to slow Murillo down. The senior led Division II with 23 goals and he added nine assists, making him the third-leading scorer in the state and earning him his second straight first-team nod, first as a Player of the Year nominee.
ANDRE VIEIRA
La Salle, Senior
Midfield
From the start of the season to the end, Vieira was a steady presence for the Rams. His play in the midfield helped solidify La Salle’s play and get the Rams peaking right when it mattered most. In the state final against Tolman, Vieira helped prevent Tiger star Roy Barrios from taking over and allowing the Rams to control the ball most of the game. A second-team all-division choice last year, it’s his first All-State selection.
FIRST TEAM
CURTIS GRANVILLE
South Kingstown, Junior
Forward
The junior made a huge leap this season and turned himself into one of the premiere finishers in Rhode Island. Granville led the Rebels with eight goals and was instrumental in their second-place finish in Division I and subsequent semifinal appearance, where they lost to La Salle in a shootout. Granville scored a goal in a tie against Tolman in a game crucial for playoff seeding and closed the regular season with a two-goal effort against Central Falls.
WRENANO HONEYGHAN
La Salle, Junior
Forward
While the Rams were known for their stellar play in the midfield and the back, Honeyghan gave them the scorer they needed to return to the top of the RIIL soccer world. The junior, a transfer from South Kingstown, was an explosive scorer at the top for the Rams and led the team in goals with nine. After a making second team All-State last year, it’s Honeyghan’s debut on the first team and he should be one of the state’s best next fall.
CIAN PURCELL
Exeter-West Greenwich, Junior
Forward
A first-team all-division choice in D-III the last two seasons, Purcell made the leap this fall to make his debut on the All-State team. Purcell was an equal opportunity scorer as no one in the division could stop him. He scored a school-record 34 goals and had eight hat tricks for the Scarlet Knights and twice scored five goals in one game. Purcell also added 18 assists to lead the state in scoring.
WILLIAM HASSETT
Moses Brown, Senior
Midfield
Few players in Rhode Island control a game without showing up on the scoreboard as much as Hassett did for the Quakers this fall. His play in the middle helped the Quakers go 8-3-5 in their second season in Division I. In the playoffs against defending champion Tolman, Hassett scored with 2:09 left to send the game to overtime before the Quakers fell in a shootout. It’s his first appearance on the All-State team.
JACK MCCARTY
South Kingstown, Senior
Midfield
The Rebels won double digit games for the first time since 2015 and McCarty’s play in the middle may have been the biggest reason why. The senior owned the ball, helping SK own possession and limit opposing offenses at the same time. He was second on the team in goals with seven but had 11 assists, putting him among the state’s leaders in the category. It’s McCarty’s first appearance on the All-State team.
ALIOU SISSOKO
Tolman, Junior
Midfield
Sissoko went from state championship hero as a sophomore to an All-Stater this fall as he continues his ascent among the state’s soccer elite. Sissoko was an instrumental piece in Tolman’s title defense this fall as a defensive midfielder who erased the opposition’s offensive weapons on a game-to-game basis, helping the Tigers return to the state finals. He finished the season with two goals and two assists.
MICHAEL TAVARES
Portsmouth, Senior
Midfield
The Patriots had the most wins this season since finishing as state runner up in 2016 and Tavares’ play in the midfield was a big reason why. Tavares, who’s headed to the University of Rhode Island next fall, was a perfect midfielder. He played with unabashed aggression that made him a devastating scorer — Tavares finished with eight goals and seven assists — as well as a debilitating defender.
MAX HOFSTETTER
La Salle, Senior
Defense
As the Rams tried to reclaim their state title, it wasn’t hard to figure out why Tolman was having a hard time scoring. Hofstetter dominated play in the biggest game of the season, never allowing the high-octane Tigers to get going thanks to his effort in the back. While being one of the state’s elite defenders, Hofstetter came up with the biggest goal of the year, clinching the Rams’ semifinal shootout win with a goal in the seventh round.
OWEN HORIAGON
South Kingstown, Senior
Defense
South Kingstown’s defense was among the best in the state and Horiagon’s leadership and skills in the back were a key component to the team’s success. With Horiagon leading the defense, the Rebels only gave up two goals four times this season and never more. In the state semifinals, SK held eventual state champion La Salle to one goal before falling in a shootout. It’s Horiagon’s first appearance on the All-State team.
CALEB WAGNER
North Kingstown, Senior
Defense
A Second-Team All-State selection last year, Wagner moved up to the First Team for one reason – he was maybe the state’s best defensive player. He led a stingy North Kingstown defense that allowed two goals in the final five games of the season on its way to finishing first in the regular season in Division I. Wagner also led the Skippers with eight goals and had three assists, scoring his final goal in NK’s quarterfinal win over Classical.
JAKE REED
Cumberland, Senior
Goalkeeper
The Clippers might have been the best 3-7-5 team in the history of RIIL soccer and Reed’s play made them a threat to win every match. His mind-bending saves kept some high-powered offenses off the board and saw Cumberland lose six of those games by one goal, including state finalists La Salle and Tolman as well as 10-win Portsmouth and nine-win Hendricken. Reed also put on a show in a tie with South Kingstown.
