2019 Providence Journal All-State Football Team
PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
CAMERON ALVES
Cranston West, Senior
Quarterback/Defensive back
There are athletes, there are football players and then there is Cameron Alves. The senior was the heart and soul of the Falcons this season and he wasn’t afraid of the responsibility. He was a quarterback who was also like a fullback, finishing with 1,545 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns while throwing for 1,007 yards and 12 TDs. The mark Alves left on the Cranston West program won’t soon be forgotten.
FREDRICK MALLAY
Mount Pleasant, Senior
Running back/Defensive back
Mallay was a known commodity coming into his senior season, but what he did this year went beyond that. In a three-game stretch late in the season, Mallay ran for over 1,000 yards and didn’t stop. Already the state’s best defensive back with the ability to score instantly on special teams, his development into an explosive running back brought Kilties football back to the limelight and into the Division II Super Bowl.
JAMES OSMANSKI
North Kingstown, Senior
Quarterback
In a season of great quarterback play, Osmanski found a way to separate himself from the pack. Forget the 2,807 passing yards, 34 touchdown passes with only seven interceptions or the 548 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Nobody in Rhode Island looked better in the pocket than Osmanski, who ran the Skippers’ complex offense like a seasoned pro. He closed his career on top, throwing for 310 yards and two TDs while rushing for 65 and a score in NK’s D-I Super Bowl win.
FIRST TEAM
OFFENSE
CONRAD SWANSON
East Greenwich, Senior
Quarterback
There weren’t a lot of quarterbacks who played with the flair of the Avenger senior, but Swanson’s style worked well in EG’s offense. His numbers were outstanding, throwing for 2,108 yards and 32 touchdowns as East Greenwich piled up the points week after week. He ran for 338 yards and three touchdowns and while his play couldn’t overcome EG’s late-season injury bug, it was more than deserving of his first All-State spot.
JAYLEN SMITH
Shea, Senior
Running back
Smith entered the season as the state’s top running back and did little to hurt that reputation. The fastest player on the field in every game he played, Smith finished with 1,900 yards rushing on 212 carries and scored 23 touchdowns. There wasn’t a defense in D-I that could stop him. He added 20 catches for 253 yards and three touchdowns to earn his second straight first-team All-State spot. Smith will play next fall for URI.
ROCCO CILLINO
Westerly, Senior
Running back
There’s got to be something in the water down in Westerly because all the Bulldogs do is produce All-State running backs. Cillino is the latest and his numbers really left no doubt. As the Bulldogs’ main ball-carrier, he finished the season with 1,810 yards rushing while scoring 23 touchdowns. He made his mark early, running for 226 yards and three TDs against Woonsocket, and didn’t slow down en route to his first All-State spot.
TYLER PEZZA
North Kingstown, Junior
Wide receiver
Tough to find a better route runner in Rhode Island than the North Kingstown star. In the Skippers’ throw-first offense, Pezza was the No. 1 option and excelled, finishing the year with 55 catches for 839 yards and seven touchdowns while drawing the best DBs the state had to offer. While unofficial, Pezza led the state in amazing catches, routinely coming down with passes while falling out of bounds. Pezza’s season deserved an All-State spot.
TOM ZEDNIK
Johnston, Junior
Wide receiver
What do you get when you take a 6-foot-5 basketball center, put him in football pads and let him go to work as a wide receiver? How about 1,288 receiving yards — believed to be a state record — and 15 touchdowns. His season opened with 250-plus yards in a loss to Classical and it never slowed down. Zednik’s size and leaping ability helped him to win every jump ball and bring some excitement back to Johnston football.
HENRY GIBSON
Portsmouth, Junior
Tight end
Gibson wasn’t a traditional tight end but nothing the Patriots did this fall was traditional. Gibson, an H-back, lined up wherever Portsmouth needed him to and was a crucial part of the team’s offense as it surprised all of Division I this season. The junior finished the season with 14 receptions for 303 yards and five touchdowns to help the Patriots earn a spot in the State Championship Super Bowl.
ANGEL SANCHEZ
Hendricken, Senior
Flex
The state’s most versatile player, Sanchez could have lined up at any skill position and been effective for the Hawks. His quickness and hands made him impossible to cover when he lined up as a receiver. Sanchez could be handed the ball out of the backfield and was a touchdown waiting to happen. He also came up with the team’s biggest throw, a TD pass in Hendricken’s regular-season win over North Kingstown.
JAKE PICARD
Hendricken, Senior
Offensive line
Despite his All-State status last season, Picard didn’t quite get the credit he deserved for his role on the Hawks offensive line. That changed this year and the senior left no doubt that he was the best blocker in Division I. When Hendricken needed Picard to move defensive lineman, he did, and the offense feasted running in his direction. As a pass blocker, his quick feet and perfect technique eliminated anyone trying to get to his quarterback.
JEVON BLACKBURN
Mount Pleasant, Senior
Offensive line
Maybe the only lineman in the state to draw oohs and aahs for his destructive blocks, Blackburn was the best interior offensive lineman in the state this season. Blackburn’s size — 6-foot-3, 300 pounds — and his wipeout blocks on pull plays were a thing of beauty. His footwork was precise and he had more pancakes this season than IHOP on a Sunday morning. A second-team All-State choice last year, his spot this year was more than deserved.
ANGEL BENZANT
Woonsocket, Senior
Offensive line
The Villa Novans don’t use finesse as part of their strategy and on offense, nobody embodied their smash-mouth persona more than their senior lineman. Benzant’s size and pure strength made him a human bulldozer, moving defensive linemen like children moving piles of sand at a playground. When the Villa Novans needed a tough yard, they ran behind their senior and did it all the way to their second straight Division II title.
NICK LOMBARDO
La Salle, Junior
Offensive line
Quarterbacks get a lot of credit for running offenses, but Lombardo’s play at center this year was just as important as the player he snapped the ball to. The junior played the position with textbook flawlessness and his lateral movement on the line was as pretty as any long TD run or deep pass the Rams had this season. Lombardo’s rise this fall earned him his first All-State spot and it sets him up as the state’s top lineman next season.
OMAR REYES
Cranston East, Senior
Offensive line
It wasn’t the best of seasons for Cranston East, but Reyes’ performance on the offensive line was impressive every single time he stepped on the field. At 6 feet, 280 pounds, Cranston East moved Reyes all over the line but he found his niche at center, where coach Tom Centore called him the best center he’s ever coached in his 31 years. It’s Reyes’ first All-State selection. He should be making his college commitment next month.
DEFENSE
COREY BROWN
Woonsocket, Senior
Defensive line
As far as pure defensive ends go, there wasn’t a more complete player this fall than the Villa Novans senior. Few tackles could match his size and strength on the outside and when it came to the pass rush, he could get to the QB in any way he wanted. Whether it was a bull rush or a spin move, Brown was getting back there. Brown’s play was crucial to Woonsocket’s turnaround and D-II title and earned him his second straight All-State spot.
MICHAEL CIARNIELLO
North Kingstown, Senior
Defensive line
While the Skippers were known for their offensive production — which Ciarniello helped with his job as an offensive lineman — there weren’t many better up the middle on the defensive line than the NK senior. He used his size, strength and deceptive speed to his advantage and played the position intelligently, always getting to the right place at the right time. A second-teamer as a junior, this is Ciarniello’s debut as a first-team All-Stater.
BRANDYN DURAND
Hendricken, Sophomore
Defensive line
While his fellow All-State teammate is the first player most noticed on the Hawks’ d-line, Durand’s play drew eyes as well. The sophomore was a destructive run-stopper and really gave opposing offenses an impossible decision as to which side to go with the ball. As a pass-rusher, Durand’s speed made him a nightmare for quarterbacks, who will have to deal with the rookie All-Stater for two more years.
JASON ONYE
Hendricken, Junior
Defensive line
When a defensive end is the fastest and strongest player on the team, it’s usually problematic for opposing offenses. Onye was a beast on the field for the Hawks and at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, it’s no wonder nearly every big college program in the country is pining after him. Onye played smart, setting the edge when needed, but he could chase down a ball-carrier or crush a QB on a whim. He should be a fun one to watch next fall.
ANDREW DIONIZIO
Cranston West, Senior
Linebacker
The Falcons had the state’s best defense this fall and the 1-2 punch of Dionizio and fellow All-Stater Roman Stanley played an instrumental role. If Stanley was the lightning, Dionizio was the thunder. The senior had plenty of bone-rattling hits that stopped skill-position players in their tracks. Dionizio finished the season with 62 tackles, 13 for loss and had four sacks this season, helping the Falcons reach the Division I Super Bowl.
MICHAEL PAIVA
North Smithfield/Mount St. Charles, Junior
Linebacker
If you’re looking for a human wrecking ball, the Northmen junior was a good place to start. Paiva was a disruptive force all over the field and there wasn’t much the offensive lines in Division IV could do to slow him down. Paiva played his best when it mattered most and while the regular season was filled with blowouts, the postseason wasn’t. The junior’s play helped the Northmen get revenge on Tiverton and win the D-IV title.
ANDREW SKIRZENSKI
Middletown, Senior
Linebacker
The Middletown senior was as hard to block as his name is hard to spell. There’s no question who the heart and the soul of the Islanders’ defense was on every snap because Skirzenski did whatever necessary to make a play. At 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Skirzenski had the size and strength to muscle through any D-II lineman and the speed to chase down whoever had the ball. It’s Skirzenski’s first All-State selection.
ROMAN STANLEY
Cranston West, Senior
Linebacker
You could find plenty of linebackers bigger, stronger and faster than Stanley, but few played with as much ferocity as the Falcons’ senior. When West needed him to take snaps as a down lineman, he did, but roaming the middle of the field is where Stanley made his presence felt. His speed, instinct and nose for the ball helped end plenty of plays. He led the Falcons with 83 tackles, picking up five sacks this fall.
ANDREW ANDELLA
St. Raphael, Senior
Defensive back
He drew the eyes of the host last summer at Will Blackmon’s football camp and Andella’s play continued to get better once the fall hit. Andella’s job for the Saints was rather simple — find the best receiver and make sure he doesn’t do damage. At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds with track speed, Andella was one of the top cover corners in Rhode Island and his steady play at the position earned him his first All-State selection.
MICHAEL JORDAN
La Salle, Senior
Defensive back
A name like that comes with lofty expectations and as a defensive back, Jordan filled them without much debate. The senior was an elite one-on-one defender and played cornerback with the confidence and aggressiveness needed to shut down the state’s top receivers. Throwing in Jordan’s direction rarely went well for any QB — ask NK’s James Osmanski, who Jordan picked twice — and the track star finished with five interceptions this season, earning his first All-State honor.
MATT REILLY
North Kingstown, Senior
Defensive back
The best defensive backs are usually pretty good wide receivers and Reilly was both. The senior understood the position using his knowledge from the offensive side of the ball to become a defensive back the Skippers knew they could count on to take receivers out of games. Reilly finished the season with 58 tackles and three interceptions and his play was crucial in the Skippers’ Division I Super Bowl win.
NATHANIEL SENA
Cranston West, Senior
Defensive back
Sena played the position like a cornerback should — he wanted to cover the best any team had to offer and wasn’t afraid to make aggressive plays. Quarterbacks who challenged him often paid the price as Sena found himself with seven interceptions and 14 pass breakups. He wasn’t afraid to step up and hit, finishing with 45 tackles this fall. His play helped Cranston West get to the Super Bowl and earned him his first All-Team selection.
SPECIAL TEAMS
PASQUALE CAMASTRO
North Smithfield/Mount St. Charles, Junior
Kicker
How do you judge a kicker? Is it the number of kicks he makes? Or the percentage? When it comes to important kicks, no one converted more with money on the line than Camastro. He buried a field goal in the waning seconds to get the Northmen past Ponaganset in the D-IV semifinals. In the Super Bowl, Camastro converted all three extra points to help the Northmen come away with a 21-20 win over Tiverton.
EDDIE BLESSING
Narragansett, Senior
Punter
While Blessing put up some healthy numbers as a quarterback, his play on special teams made him the most unique weapon in the state. The senior boomed plenty of punts this season, finishing with a 41.2-yard average per punt, but teams couldn’t sit back and wait for kicks to arrive. Narragansett faked five punts this season and converted four, using Blessing’s speed and arm to keep drives moving.
NATE UPCHURCH
Tiverton, Senior
Kick returner
Coming in as defending Division IV champions, the Tigers needed veterans to step up this season and Upchurch more than filled his role. He was a terrific offensive player, but his skill as a return man helped the Tigers get points on the board without playing a down. Upchurch ran back two kickoffs for scores as well as two punts and always put the Tigers in good field position.
