BOSTON --- The Red Sox have claimed utility infielder Christian Arroyo off waivers from Cleveland.

Boston will be the fourth organization for the 25-year-old, who also has big league time with the Giants, Rays and Indians. Arroyo has played in 71 games since 2017, including one with Cleveland this season.

Arroyo once carried with him considerable pedigree. He was the 25th overall pick by San Francisco out of a Tampa high school in the 2013 draft. Arroyo was the No. 1 prospect in the Giants system when he was traded with Denard Span and two other players to the Rays for third baseman Evan Longoria in December 2017.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom was also a member of Tampa Bay’s administration during Arroyo’s departure. He was traded to Cleveland in July 2019 along with right-hander Hunter Wood for outfielder Ruben Cardenas.

Arroyo is out of options, which will force the Red Sox to either slip him through waivers to the alternate site at Pawtucket or add him to the traveling party for this weekend’s series with the Yankees. Boston’s 40-man roster and 60-man player pool are now full.
