Hundreds of students will have to find other accommodation.

But construction delays have meant that the building will not be completed for September.

All students affected have been written to by The Mace Group, the developers behind The Depot, and they are working with the University of Exeter to ensure all students have alternative accommodation.

Work on The Depot is expected to be completed before January.

A spokesman for The Depot said: “Due to construction delays at The Depot which our contractor has been unable to fully mitigate, we will unfortunately not be able to open the building in time for the start of this academic year.

“We have written to all the affected students and we are working with the University to ensure everyone has alternative accommodation for the start of term.

“We apologise to everyone impacted by the delay and expect to have the rooms available from January.”

“Any student with concerns about the delay to The Depot site can contact: thedepot@crm-students.com.”

A statement on the CRM website, the letting agents for the block, adds: “We have identified a range of student accommodation options within the city and are holding them for a short period to enable you to transfer your booking to an alternative residence for the 19/20 academic year.”

Details on the Mace Group website about The Depot describe the development as being at the forefront of modern student living, offering residents expertly designed accommodation, well specified amenities, multi-functional communal areas and private open space.

Set around a large central landscaped private courtyard, the scheme will rise to eight storeys, providing 601 bedrooms comprising a mixture of apartments, studio-style living and cluster accommodation alongside a range of onsite facilities and amenities.

At ground floor the retail space will include a mix of shops, restaurants and bars which will form a key part of Exeter’s continuing regeneration and ambitious growth plans.
