How you can help the Shasta County Sheriff's Office solve crimes with your security camera

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office is hoping your security camera will cause crime in the area to scram.

The office is encouraging people with a security camera in Shasta County to register for the new Security Camera Registry and Mapping (SCRAM) program so that detectives can use the footage to solve crimes.

"As technology has become so readily available and easier to set up and maintain, there are a growing number of citizens who now own and operate security camera systems at their residences and/or businesses," a press release on the new program reads.

A deputy would still contact the owner of the property to get permission to use the footage, but the idea is to let them know which businesses and homes in a given area have cameras in the first place.
