Update: More details released surrounding shooting by Red Bluff police

Red Bluff police on Thursday identified the man who was shot and killed by officers early Wednesday morning outside an apartment complex.

The man was identified as 38-year-old Alex Francisco Vazquez of Red Bluff.

Police shot the man after he fired at officers, investigators said. The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Red Bluff, where he later died.

Officers responded to the Meadow Vista Apartments at 710 Vista Way around 1:15 a.m. for a report of an altercation involving a man.

When authorities arrived, they contacted the man, who then attacked officers by firing an undetermined number of rounds from a handgun at police, investigators said.

The Red Bluff Police Department did not provide details on what led to the suspect shooting at officers.

Red Bluff police said Thursday that Vazquez was wanted by the FBI on a federal warrant alleging possessing of controlled substances with the intent to distribute. He was also considered armed and dangerous, police said.

After Vazquez fired at police, an officer fired back and hit him. He then fell to the ground while still holding the handgun. But the man was still alive, and he refused to give up his gun despite negotiations with officers, investigators said.

A four-officer team used a ballistic shield in an attempt to take the man in custody. But the man attempted to shoot the approaching officers, police said.

Two officers then shot the man. Police rendered medical aid to him before he was taken to the hospital, investigators said. Video contributed to the Record Searchlight by a neighbor appears to show a portion of the incident.

Three officers were involved in the shooting and have been placed on paid administrative leave, Chief Kyle Sanders said in a news release.

None of the officers were injured. Their names were not released.

Police said they are still going through numerous video recordings of the incident and they are working to expedite release of the officers' body camera footage and provide a more detailed account of what happened during the shooting.
