Who has your vote for Record Searchlight Athlete of the Week? (Feb. 11-17)

Here are this week's Record Searchlight Athlete of the Week nominees. The nominees were chosen by Record Searchlight staff based on the past week's performances.

This week's nominees include five basketball players, three soccer players and two snowboarders.

Male Athlete of the Week nominees

Josiah Palumbo (Foothill)

Palumbo put together strong performances in the last week of the regular season against Chico on Feb. 11 and Shasta last Friday. Palumbo scored a game high 18 points against the Wildcats and followed it up by adding 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals against the Wolves.

Foothill (24-4, 8-2 EAL) holds the No. 1 seed in the CIF Northern Section Division III playoffs and will face the winner of No. 4 seed Enterprise (15-12, 4-6 EAL) and No. 5 seed Shasta (16-12, 3-7 EAL) on Feb. 26 at home. 

Logan Hawes (U-Prep)

Hawes in the last two weeks has taken his game to the next level with his aggressive approach inside the paint. On Feb. 11, against Yreka, Hawes scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds and five steals.

Hawes last Friday against Lassen scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. U-Prep (20-8, 9-1 NAL) holds the No. 1 seed in the CIF Northern Section playoffs and will face either No. 8 seed Paradise (13-12, 5-5 Westside) or No. 9 seed Yreka (12-15, 3-7 NAL) Friday at home. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Miguel Rodriguez (Anderson)

The redeem season has continued for Anderson who failed to reach the playoffs last year. In 2020, the Cubs have been led by Rodriguez, who scored two goals and added three assists against Lassen last Monday.

He scored a goal against U-Prep in a 3-2 victory over the Panthers last Thursday. The win helped the Cubs clinch the Northern Athletic League title and No. 2 seed in the CIF Northern Section Division II playoffs. Anderson (20-1-1, 10-0 NAL) will face the winner of No. 7 seed Yreka (10-7-1, 5-4-1 NAL) or No. 10 seed Oroville (5-12-2, 3-5-1 Westside) at 3 p.m. Thursday the California Soccer Park.

DeMarreya Lewis-Cooper (Enterprise)

Lewis-Cooper helped lead Enterprise (15-12, 4-6 NAL), which is coming together and finished off the regular season with two critical wins against Red Bluff on the road Feb. 11 and Pleasant Valley at home on Friday.

Against the Spartans, Lewis Cooper scored 22 points on 9-of-20 shootings with five assists and four steals. No. 4 seed Enterprise will face Shasta (16-12, 3-7 NAL) at 7 p.m. this Friday at home for the fifth and final time this season (fourth at home) in the CIF Northern Section Division III playoffs first round. The winner will face No. 1 seed Foothill on the road Feb. 26.

Ethan Weaver (Mount Shasta)

Weaver of Mount Shasta High School won the final regular season high school snowboard race of the year Monday at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. Weaver completed the dual giant slalom course in 1:12.67. Weaver will have two weeks to rest before competing at the California State Ski and Snowboard Championships held at Northstar California Resort in Truckee. The tournament will run March 2-6.

Female Athlete of the Week nominees

Kaleia Mizuta (U-Prep)

U-Prep junior Kaleia Mizuta recently led the Panthers in scoring.

Mizuta ended the regular season in high octane fashion last week for the Panthers. Mizuta scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds with six three steals against Lassen last Thursday. Against Yreka on Feb. 11, Mizuta scored 22 points. No. 5 seed U-Prep (17-10, 7-3 NAL) faces No. 12 Orland (7-20, 1-9 Butte View) tonight at 7 p.m. in the CIF Northern Section playoffs first round.

Adiah Edwardson (U-Prep)

U-Prep girls soccer (22-0-1, 10-0 NAL) ended the regular season having won 46 of its last 47 regular season games, and it was Edwardson who kept the Panthers on track in one of its toughest league games from the past few seasons against West Valley on Feb. 11.

Edwardson scored the winning goal against the Eagles and then added an assist against Anderson last Thursday. U-Prep has the No. 1 seed for the CIF Northern Section Division Division II playoffs and will play the winner of No. 8 seed Yreka (7-6-2, 5-4-1 NAL) or Las Plumas (9-9-3, 5-5 Westside) at 3 p.m. Thursday at home.

Sammie Wunner (Redding Christian)

Wunner has been a key catalyst for Redding Christian girls basketball, which won 12 straight games to close the regular season. On Feb. 11, against Burney, Wunner scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds.

Wunner scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds against Burney last Friday. No. 1 seed Redding Christian (18-5, 8-0 Five Star) will host No. 8 seed Weed (6-13, 1-9 Shasta Cascade) at 7 p.m. Friday in the CIF Northern Section VI playoffs second round.

Alyssa Sheats (West Valley)

West Valley goalkeeper Alyssa Sheats faced an onslaught of shots from U-Prep on Feb. 11 and still held her ground. Sheats made 10 saves against the Panthers.

She will be on goal when the No. 3 seed Eagles (14-5-3, 8-2) face the winner of No. 6 seed Orland (11-6-2, 7-2-1 Butte View) and No. 11 Paradise (6-15, 3-7 Westside) in the second round of the CIF Northern Section Division II playoffs on Thursday at California Soccer Park. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. 

Clara Lindsay (Foothill)

Lindsay took first place in the final high school snowboard race of the year with a time of 1:22.93 Monday at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. Lindsay will be one of several local alpine athletes who will compete in the California State Ski and Snowboard Championships held at Northstar California Resort in Truckee. The event runs March 2-6.
