The Sweetwater Trio will present a concert of chamber music 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Congregation Emanu El in Redlands.
Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
Trio members violinist Lawrence Sonderling, violist Anja Sonderling and cellist Daril Bohland have been performing together in Southern California only since 2015, but each has many years of playing and performing experience.
The trio specializes in classical and modern works, including the music of little-known French composer Jean Cras, whose 1927 trio will be performed on this concert. The program also includes the String Trio in D Major, Op. 9 No. 2, by Beethoven and Serenade for String Trio, Op. 10, by Ernö von Dohnányi
The Sonderlings play a violin and viola made by Anja Sonderling, and Daril Bohland plays a cello he made in 1984.
Violinist Lawrence Sonderling, who has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, recitalist and recording artist, was a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for 37 years, according to a press release. He is pursuing a second career as an actor and has appeared at A Noise Within in Pasadena and at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon.
Violist Anja Sonderling grew up in Berlin where she studied piano with Siegfried Schubert-Weber, whose teacher was a student of Brahms, and began violin lessons at age 10. She received her degree in violin performance from Sonoma State University, but later switched to viola. She has worked as a flight instructor and airline pilot and several years ago she became a violin maker, studying with Michael Darnton at the Southern California Violin Making Workshop.
Cellist Daril Bohland studied with Don Garlic at the University of Northern Colorado where he was principal cellist of the university orchestra. He later studied with Jurgen Delemos at the University of Colorado, during which time he was principal cellist of the Boulder Philharmonic. He was an elementary school teacher for the past 37 years and during that time he made four cellos, the first of which took fifth place in the 1984 American Violin Society violin-making competition in Ottawa.
