Abilene High girls basketball blows out San Angelo Lake View

Abilene High's Destiny Potts gets the ball knocked onto her head while going up for a basket against Lake View High Friday Dec. 14, 2018 at the Eagle Gym. Final score was 54-22, Abilene High.

The Abilene High girls basketball team overcame a slow start to blow out San Angelo Lake View 54-22 in a non-district contest Friday at Eagle Gym.

AHS (10-9) was without two starters Friday night, and the Lady Eagles play suffered early as they were tied at 6 with the Maidens (1-9) at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter.

However, AHS' Tevyan Jones kick-started the Lady Eagles offense with six quick points, helping her team take a 12-2 lead. A few minutes later, Trakenya Roberson and Georgia Montes got into the act as they hit back-to-back 3-point goals that gave AHS a 15-2 run to close the first quarter.

Lady Eagles coach Terri Aston said she expected the slow start but was pleased with the way her team responded.

"I knew when we decided to sit a few of our starters for rest that we might have a slow start," Aston said. "But I liked how we responded after I called a timeout midway through the first."

AHS finished the quarter with a 21-8 lead.

In the second quarter, the Lady Eagles defense smothered Lake View, allowing just three points in the frame.

Aston added that she was happy to see some of her reserves get extended minutes.

"We came into tonight's game wanting to get everyone some playing time," Aston said. "We played well enough in the first half to get a little bit of a lead. So I was able to get some subs in, and we were able to press and get some steals."

Abilene High's Tevyan Jones tries to block Lake View High's Mikaila Wagner from passing the ball during Friday's basketball game at the Eagle Gym Dec. 14, 2018. Final score was 54-22, Abilene High.

In the second half, AHS went on an 11-0 run extending the lead to 29, thanks to layups by Roberson, Destiny Potts and Brooklin Ellis. The run forced a Lake View timeout, however, the Lady Eagles continued their dominance the remainder of the period as they led 43-19.

In the fourth quarter, AHS pulled off their full court press and cruised to a 32-point victory.

Montes and Roberson led the way for Abilene High scoring 14 points apiece.

Lake View had no scorers in double figures, but Gabby Escalante had a team-high six points.

"I liked how we played tonight, and while Lake View isn't the stiffest competition, we did what we were supposed to," Aston said. "Now we've got to refocus and get ready for the rest of our district schedule."

Abilene High's Kelly Boyland is momentarily blocked from making the shot during the Eagles game against Lake View High Friday Dec. 14, 2018. Final score was 54-22, Abilene High.

The Lady Eagles next game will be Tuesday at home against North Richland Hills Richland in a District 3-6A game.
