Kaidon Salter set to enroll early at Tennessee

One of the top prospects in Tennessee’s class of 2021 is set to join the Volunteers early. Kaidon Salter, a four-star quarterback out of Texas, announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he would be enrolling at Tennessee in January.

Salter committed to Tennessee on May 10th as a part of the Vols’ wild spring surge. He chose the Volunteers over offers from Auburn, Arkansas, UCLA, Baylor, South Carolina and several others. Salter is the 76th ranked player overall in the class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s the third ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class.

Salter stands in at 6-1, 185 pounds and flashes a live arm. He took part in the Elite 11 finals this summer, impressing instructor Trent Dilfer in Nashville.

“He was really, really clean and there is some juice in that body,” Dilfer told 247Sports in June. “It wouldn’t surprise me if he can take one step and 360 dunk. He has that kind of juice in his body. Super coachable, they threw these inside seam shots, right, left, one high, benders, stay skinny and they cross. First rep may not have been perfect and I watch the second rep and his correction rep was money time after time after time.”

Salter will essentially fill the spot vacated by Jarrett Guarantano after the 2020 season. He will join Brian Maurer, J.T. Shrout and Harrison Bailey on the quarterback depth chart as each guy attempts to claim the starting gig for 2021. Enrolling in January will give Salter an opportunity to go ahead and dive into to Jim Chaney’s offense, perhaps giving him a chance to compete in the fall.

As a junior, Salter threw for over 2,500 yards and 28 touchdowns. He’ll look to build on that during his senior season before quickly moving on to the next chapter of his career in Knoxville.
