CROWDS took to the streets in a Ross-shire town to enjoy a spectacular Beating of the Retreat from massed cadets.

Dingwall welcomed the massed 'Tri Service Cadet Pipes and Drums' last Friday – the 13th year running that the Beat the Retreat has taken place in the county town.

The event is firmly marked in the Dingwall events calendar and the army, air and sea cadets received a warm welcome from locals and visitors alike.

Cadets come from all over the UK every year for tuition at Cameron Barracks, in Inverness. During this time they enhance their playing skills and aim to take part in a number of events including the Dingwall Beat the Retreat and performing in concert at the Ironworks, Inverness to showcase their talents as youth performers.

The cadets formed up at the Army Cadet Centre on Ferry Road and marched along Dingwall High Street where they then massed outside the Town Hall and entertained the crowds with a retreat programme.

A host of dignitaries were also present, including the Lord Lieutenant, Janet Bowen, Ross and Cromarty Civic Leader, Cllr Margaret Paterson, Highland Council convener Cllr Bill Lobban and a number of others.

Cllr Paterson said: “I and my fellow councillors are deeply impressed by what the Cadets achieve in such a short space of time in their week of training at Cameron Barracks.

"It is great for the Cadets to get a chance to put into practice what they have learned and to entertain the public at the same time. They are all a credit to their trainers, instructors, families and themselves.”
