Highland Council confirms details of latest rock face works on A890 Stromeferry bypass; two months of disruption expected, with most work happening at night

MONTHS of disruption await Wester Ross motorists again this autumn – after Highland Council confirmed its latest round of rock face stabilisation work on the Stromeferry bypass.

The local authority has confirmed that this year’s programme of works on the A890, which are expected to last two months, will get under way on September 9.

The council hopes that disruption at the notoriously unstable rock face will be less severe than last year, as most of the road closures will be at night.

However, convoy systems will continue to run during the day and it has warned that “delays of up to 20 minutes” can still be expected.

Details of the overnight closures and daytime traffic measures come just a week after officers met community representatives at Achmore to discuss the work.

This followed on from a public drop-in session in Lochcarron back in April and earlier discussions that took place place with affected community councils.

“Unlike the works carried out last year, only night time closures of the route will be required as during the day traffic management on the existing road will be in place,” said a council spokeswoman.

“However there will be one weekend closure from Friday night until Monday morning, over the weekend of September 13 - 16.

“The nightly closures, which run from 10pm to 7am, will start on September 9 and continue until November 8. From 7am to 10pm there will be no weight restrictions on the current road, making the A890 route suitable for all vehicles travelling during the day."
